Community Workshop
Materials: Terracotta clay, water.
Pinching is a building technique of compressing clay between fingers and thumb to build height and volume. In this collaborative workshop, Che invites participants to pinch slabs of clay together in silence. Sensing the clay’s thickness between their own and one another’s fingertips, a solitary act becomes a collective exercise in close listening, negotiation, and support.

The resulting wave forms are a visible record of tactile communication between participants. Slumps, folds, and ruptures mark moments of imbalance, when an initiation is not fully supported. Graceful curves and extensions emerge when collaborators listen closely through their hands, ready to both initiate and receive.

Expanding from the Between Us, A Vessel Grows workshop at Richmond Art Gallery, this iteration brings all participants together to create one continuous wave. In this collective process, each person must sense their partner’s hands closely while also staying aware of the pushes and pulls rippling from collaborators beside them. Like a wave that begins as a small displacement and travels far beyond its origin, each participant’s material initiation can influence the form of the whole.
